Health & Safety

The company fully accepts and recognizes its duty of care towards all stakeholders with regard to Health & Safety responsibilities. A dedicated team is employed to focus on compliance with legislation and the latest methods of "best practice" to ensure that our employees and the community are safe when in contact with our business. The Company is a major member of the Minerals Products Association (link to website). Our Managing Director Simon Clubb is a member of the Counsel for this large trade association. The MPA have many safety initiatives that we fully endorse and promote including ‘’zero harm’’ and the ‘’Stay Safe’’ that are aimed to raise awareness of the dangers associated with quarry sites, standing water and the dangers to cyclists from HGV’s.

The importance of continual improvement, risk assessment and adequate training is acknowledged. An ongoing program of instruction using internal resources and external consultants ensures competence and understanding. All JCL operatives are trained to CPC level as a minimum. The encouragement of "stakeholder involvement" through local liaison committees, school educational visits and participation through the Minerals Products Association help to inform the community about the potential dangers at quarries and plants. A recognition of our responsibility to warn and inform is taken on board.

 

All JCL HGV’s are linked to GPS and automatic tachometers so the speed, performance and location of our trucks is always known to us and managed closely. Our HGV’s also carry webcams and nearside cameras to help identify cyclists that could put themselves in danger when trucks turn left. We have a zero tolerance policy of illegal practices or driving and our drivers are made fully aware of their responsibilities as our ambassadors on the road.

 

Under the COSHH requirements our products are analysed to identify the composition, ingredients and potential hazards associated with the product. Helpful first aid measures and handling/storage advice is provided. Data sheets are available on request from our Health and Safety Office at our Head Office address.

 JCL have a proven track record in the handling, transportation and land-filling of waste. The company employs three WAMITAB qualified waste managers to ensure that the company and its customers are compliant in all respects.

 

In 2003 the Company won a national award dedicated to recognition of good health and safety practice through innovation a team of senior managers from the company collected Frank Davis trophy at the Health and Safety Best Practice Awards during the Quarry Products Association ceremony.

Monthly Health and Safety and environment meetings at all sites together with quarterly meetings with the Board of Directors ensure that all incidents are recorded, dealt with properly and learned from. The Board ensures that adequate resources and finance is made available to protect all stakeholders that interact with JCL.
